Referral Location

I am building an HTML form that a physician will fill out when referring a patient for additional care. One of the options on this form will be "referral to" which needs to be a fixed list of hospitals and other specialists.

I'm trying to decide if I should have a concept such as "refer to" with coded answers (probably all of which would be contained in their own class) or if I should have this concept be a text datatype then use html forms style=location.  One downside to this is that I don't really want users to be able to select various hospitals and physician offices as the location of other encounters.

What do you think makes the most sense based on everyones' experience and the data model?

Thank you very much,

Tobin

Re: Referral Location

Tobin,

I am still not exactly sure I understand what you are trying to do... Do you want a dropdown list of potential classes of referral locations (hospital, clinic, district hospital, etc.) or specific locations (Hospital A, Hospital B, etc.)? We actually thought that it would be a good idea to be able to use the same location function that draws coded locations for the encounter, and be able to use these for this field. However, as you suggest, there should be flags on the location table which restrict which appear for which context of use. For xforms, it was possible to remove inappropriate entries from the dropdown at the time the form was deployed. I presume the same would apply to HTML forms if you loaded the locations into the form.

In the interim, we just used a text field and entered a numeric code for the facility...

Re: Referral Location

Hi Tobin,

I don’t know what is best.  We created concepts for each location, and have a coded concept for “referral to”.  Our referral to locations didn’t match most of the other locations already in the system.

Thanks,

James

Re: Referral Location

Tobin,
Our situation is also same like James - where we have referral to or referred by locations which are not in our openMRS system. So we have created seperate coded concept as "referred to" and "referred by".
Thanks,
Rajib

Re: Referral Location

In reply to this post by Tobin Greensweig

Tobin --

I think the longer term view is that referrals are a special case (subclass) of orders, so you should try to implement that if at all possible.  Ideally, the results of the referral will come back and be entered as an encounter with the referral provider at the referral location.  Think about what additional fields you would need, clearly location and provider (user pre-1.9), probably a reason for/type of referral concept, maybe some fields to track the appointment if it is the facility's responsibility to make the appointment, assure transportation, etc.

As for limiting the display of locations and providers available both in clinical forms (internal providers/locations only) and referrals (external providers/locations only), I would use a tag (or tag-like attribute), but that doesn't help much in HTML forms.  For pre-1.9, you could user roles to limit the provider lists (role attribute).  For locations, maybe a logic rule would work, otherwise you're going to need explicit lists (ugly to maintain).

Good luck, Roger
